Again, welcome to first grade! I regret I have not entered more information on this site. Here goes.
The year got off to a very good start. We have done so much this first quarter and it is very evident that the children are really into learning!
They have completed a reader, have begun in earnest to master the math facts through 10 and have already done a project in science on animals. Their Labor Day projects for social studies were very impressive as well.
They are about to learn all about the sacrament of Baptism and will share their stories.
We will take our first field trip to St. Anne Convent to explore the woods and to visit the older Sisters in Holy Family Home. I know that rolling down the front hill will be a fun thing to do!
Soon all of us will begin to work on the annual Christmas play for our older friends in the parish.
First grade is a great experience for all!

Summer Time

Our first graders have accomplished so much this year!

It is difficult to mention all of their successes in this site. Most of the children can read any book in our classroom that they pick up. The math facts through 20 are no longer the challenge they once were. Progress has been made in handwriting, story composition, art, science and social studies projects.

The class has read during our Masses, has sung many "holy" songs and can tell you about most of the holy days and saints.

My advice to parents is that they continue to have their children read something everyday during the summer months, go over the math facts in games or while driving on vacaton, go to Sunday Mass, go to the library, the museums in our area and just plain have fun!

All the Sisters of Divine Providence join me in wishing all of you the peace and happpiness that comes with the coming of the Holy Spirit at this Pentecostal season!

Spring

The calendar says it's spring; however, as I write this it is still rainy and cold!

This week is the holiest week of the Church year which includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. All Lent has prepared us for the great feast of Easter.

Our recent religion classes have been centered on these holy days. The children have also made and sent Easter wishes to the members of our T.O.Y. program.

The children have become avid readers this passed quarter. Most of them have read a book to the class. This is quite an achievement

Formal spelling lessons were introduced into the curriculum and the children seem to like the challenges this brings.

They are currently intent on learning and memorizing the addition and subtraction facts through 20. Next will come 2-digit addition and subtraction as well as measurement.

In science they are involved with the study of matter: solids, liquids and gases.

Mrs. Wade's social studies has been studying our country and our heroes.

We just began the last quarter of the school year. I am always amazed at all that has been learned so far and we have more material to cover!

All the Sisters of Divine Providence join me in wishing you and your family a joyful and Blessed Easter season!

Progress in First Grade

Here we are at the end of another month of first grade! We have accomplished many things since last month.

Lent has begun and the class is doing something different each day to prepare for Easter. Today their Lenten practice was to "say a prayer for the peole of Haiti". Soon they will pray the Stations of the Cross in church.

Formal spelling lessons have begun.

Each student will read a book to the class. Some have already reached this goal.

They have started working on the teen facts in math.

They are doing a weather project for science.

They made land forms from clay in social studies.

It is a real pleasure for me to watch the growth and maturity of this class.

Blessings for a happy and enriching Lenten season to you and your family!

A New Year

As we begin this year of grace I will take this opportunity to wish you the peace and joy that the Christ Child came to bring!

The children are to be congratulated for their wonderful performances of our Christmas program. First Graders are the most excited, I think.

When the first Sunday of Advent comes along, they enjoy making the traditional Advent wreath from paper plates and construction paper. These are, hopefully, prayed with and "lighted" at home.

We have been working very hard on producing a Christmas presentation for the older members of St. Henry Parish who belong to our T.O.Y. (Together Old and Young) program.
Along with the invitations the children sent, they also made Christmas cards, and created bookmarkers as gifts.

In addition to all these extra fun things, the children have continued to progress in reading, math, science and social studies. In January formal spelling lessons will be introduced into the curriculum.

It is my hope and prayer that each of you will enjoy the peace and happiness that the Christmas season brings. The Sisters of Divine Providence join me in this wish!

Sr. Jean Graded 1

In October, the children were scheduled to visit Sun Rock Farm to learn all about farm animals, planting vegetables, hunting eggs. That didn't happen because of the heavy rain. Thistrip has been re-scheduled for May, 2010.

This month we will be spending a large amount of time preparing our Christmas program for the members of our T.O.Y. (Together, Old and Young.) The older folks really enjoy the little ones' performances.

The children have been learning about Baptism in religion class.

Some of the children have "taken off" with their reading skills. Others have become quite "speedy" with math facts.
